Second Ed. Saturdays - Grey Knights

Quick, where were you 20 years ago?!  Well nevermind that now, I want to talk about the Grey Knights

Grey Knights have been out a while.  No, I mean...Grey Knights have been out AWHILE.  Back as early as 1991.  20 years ago!  (hence the opening sentence of this post.)

Here is what they looked like way back then...

  1. This is what Grey Knights really are.
Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

  2. Ron's right, and someone else I read recently put it well too, I think Gotthammer. When I think of 40K, I still think of those original takes and early materials.

  3. Nowadays, it seems like Grey Knights are just another chapter of Marines. No longer are they the elite, tiny army that you think of. The look like all the other chapters out there and those can do tiny, elite forces just the same.
    Kinda sad really.

I would have loved to see this kind of ornate armour and have these guys truly be an Elite force that can put a half dozen models on the table and make for a fun game.

  4. Half a dozen would really be something.

I can't put my finger on what it is, but something in the new model design isn't quite right either. I'm glad the designers were bold with the shapes, but there's now a fragility in them too. And rather than this and the idea of high polish in the art and painting, I'd have preferred worn bulk. Shining armour is somehow wrong for what these guys are. Metaphorically they may be knights in shining armour, but I'd say they need to seem more like they come from a dark place, the depths of history.
